The findings of the 2000 - 2001 Superpave Implementation and Needs Assessment combined with historical data from previous years surveys are the focus of this report. The 2001 survey (fifth in an annual series) was completed in May 2001. Data collected reflect 2000 construction activities and design plans for 2001. From these results annual national benchmarks for Superpave implementation were established.

The Long-Term Pavement Performance program (LTPP) is the largest pavement performance research program ever undertaken, gathering data from 2,000 pavement test sections over a 20-year test period.

During the AASHTO Annual Meeting in December 2000, the Standing Committee on Highways approved an Administrative Resolution officially ending the Lead States program and commending the team members for their work.

The AASHTO Task Force on SHRP Implementation met in Irvine, CA, on January 29, 2000. The meeting report is now online.

The Spring/Summer 2000 issue of the the Superpave Implementation Update, published by FHWA's Superpave Technology Delivery Team, is now available.

In September 1999, states were surveyed on segregation, tender zone and compaction related to Superpave mixes. A slide show presenting a summary of the results is now available. Complete survey results are also available in Microsoft Excel format and HTML.

The Superpave Team has developed a Transition Plan for transferring its responsibilities to the TRB Superpave Committee.

ASCE announces a call for papers for the Civil Engineering Conference & Exposition 2001: Engineers in a Changing World. The conference is scheduled for October 10-13, 2001, in Houston, Texas. Suggested subject areas include engineering management, education, information systems, and pavement rehabilitation, and materials. Proposals are due by May 19, 2000.

The Asphalt Institute and FHWA are sponsoring the conference - Superpave: Building Roads for the 21st Century, scheduled for April 10-12, 2000, in Denver, Colorado. Sessions include Selecting Materials, Design and Production, Construction and QC/QA, and Performance and the Future.

FHWA and ASCE announce the Second International Contest on LTPP Data Analysis. Participating teams will be given a copy of the DataPave software and will establish a research objective, perform research, analyze the data, and submit a paper reporting their findings. Possible topics include traffic, environment, distress, materials, and pavement structural design. Papers are due by June 1, 2000. Proceedings of the 1999 AASHTO Lead States Workshop, August 30-31, 1999, St. Louis, Missouri, are now available. Included is a review by the Superpave Team of its implementation efforts, including lessons learned, transition plan, action steps, goals, budget and software.

Minutes of the TRB Superpave Mixture and Aggregate Expert Task Group meeting held on September 21-22, 1999, are now available.

June 15, 1999
Papers to be considered for presentation to the 79th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board are being accepted in all transportation research subjects. Papers must be submitted to TRB by August 1, 1999.

A series of slides has been developed to present the results of the Superpave Implementation Survey III, 1998-1999. The slides show states which have implemented or plan to implement Superpave binder and mixture specifications. Graphs show Superpave project and market share increases, as well as challenges to implementation.

Proceedings of the 1998 AASHTO Lead States Workshop, September 27-29, 1998, St. Louis, Missouri, are now available to view online. These workshop proceedings provide background on the Lead States Program and document workshop objectives, opening remarks and breakout sessions. Included are reviews by each Lead States Team of its implementation efforts, specifically accomplishments, lessons learned, impact, phase-out considerations, estimated budget and goals.
